Though still poor compared with other area of education, the study of the theory of adult education has been expanding. However, little attention has been paid to the philosophy of adult education. The reason why the philosophy of adult education has been neglected is not the scope of this paper, but the professionals of adult education seem to confront the problem on what theory to depend, and so, it seems of necessity to analyze the philosophy of adult education. From this point of view, in this paper, I introduce S. B. Merriam's attempt to analyze the philosophy of adult education, and examine the philosophy of adult education based on her study.
