Basic considerations on a particle identification method utilizing dE/dx・E products, including a discussion on the limitation of isotope separation for heavy charged particles, are described and a geometrical design of dE/dx・E counter telescope is presented. Based on these considerations, rocket borne instruments capable of observing the abundance ratio of protons, deuterons and tritons in the Van Allen belt were constructed. The system performance, the characteristics of the silicon dE/dx detectors, and the results of the rocket experiments are briefly described.
