In this article, I examine what Malthus really said about Ireland from the First Essay (1798) to the sixth Essay (1826) and the second Principles (1836). It is true Malthus's two articles on Ireland in the Edinburgh Review (1808, 1809) have been directed attention to in Japanese as well as Euro-American literature. But I attempt to place them in the context of the entire Malthus's works. It is only in this way that we can understand how these articles, which are conspicuous for both their liberalism and their case for extreme 'laissez-faire', gave Malthus a temporary exaltation because of his occasional connection of the Whiggery, only to go back to his original stance on Ireland of the second Essay after 1815. I also, more significantly, try to contrast Malthus's discourses on Ireland with the 'more convincing' views on her of F. Horner, G. Ensor, and D. Ricardo, with special reference to A. Smith's rent theory—this is indeed the starting point of Malthus's speculations on Ireland as well as contemporary 'Irish' thinkers—and the eminent Irish political economist T. Newenham's contributions. Finally I will emphasize 'non-empirically' deductive nature of Malthus's views on Ireland.
