As put by M. Blaug at the beginning of the twenty-first century, "[o]ver the years, Smith has turned out to be one of the subtlest and most complex thinkers in the whole of history of economic thought. The flood of books and articles on various aspects of his writings have been nothing short of amazing and we are sorely in need of a new stock-taking." (Blaug 2001, 158) This review article is intended to provide the "stock-taking" of the recent Adam Smith Studies in the field of humanities, say from the Classics to philosophical studies, through various achievements in the areas of literary and linguistic studies, which have emerged mainly over the last decade. Considerations of the elements of religious thought, such as whether Adam Smith's concept of an "impartial spectator" is Stoic or Christian, will also be registered. We then proceed to review the recent revival of Das Adam Smith Problem and the correlatively rekindling debates over the nature of the "Rousseau and Smith" relationships. To find a solution to these problems, we really need interdisciplinary Smith studies that involve economics, philosophy, political science, and so on, and we are particularly interested in these disputes. All of us know that they are the most important for both the Adam Smith Study and the history of social as well as economic thought, and the two problems are of the kind that must be settled by all means. Therefore, we will be highly delighted if this review is successful in promoting some kind of effort for such a solution in Japan.
