In clinical trials there may be the basic ideas by saying two words from basic logic : "necessary" and "sufficient". At times there has been a distinction made using them. For example, A is "necessary" to produce B. Or B is "sufficient" to produce C. Or A is "necessary" but not "sufficient" to produce B. It seems that good design, careful experiment, and the appropriate statistics are "necessary" when we talk about clinical trials. But they are not "sufficient". They are not in and of themselves enough. We need also to talk about "quality of life",which, to me,means the psychological aspect. We need both groups, we need both experimental and psychological aspects in our clinical trials. And with that, this paper was presented in the Workshop of Clinical Trials of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis of VIII International Congress of Neuromuscular Diseases, held in Kyoto in July of 1994.
