• The effect of an extract from a beefsteak plant on the development of imapaired glucose tolerance was investigated by oral glucose tolerance test in the conscious state in adult rats, having glucose intolerance induced by streptozotocin in the neonatal period. The extract from the plant was obtained by steeping in water and heating for 30 minutes. It was given to rats as drinking water during 2 months immediately after weaning. Other rats were given water without the extract as a control. Body weight increases during the term were almost the same between the two groups. Fasting plasma glucose did not change significantly in the two groups of rats. However, plasma glucose levels after glucose loading decreased significantly in rats given the extract, compared to the control rats. This improvement of glucose intolerance indicates the plant contains a component which has influences on glucose metabolism.
