Jigoro KANO, who is known a founder of Kodokan-Judo, contributed to Education, Sports, and other Japanese martial arts as the principal of a higher teacher-training school, the president of The Great Japan Association of Physical Education and as a member of The International Olympic Committee. However, although he was active in various fields, his theories have generally been considered only as Judo theory, because he often used the words of Judo or Principles of Judo when refering to other disciplines. So when we try to understand his theories, we have to take care to remember that his conception of Judo includes several other meanings. The aim of this paper is to make the basic conceptions of Jigoro KANO's words of Judo clear. The summary of this paper is as follows : 1. Jigoro KANO founded Kodokan-Judo in 1882. At that time, his conception of Judo consisted of physical training, game and moral training in which he determined the three purposes of Judo. 2. In 1915 he defined Judo as "The road of the most effective use of one's mental and physical energy". "The most effective use of one's mental and physical energy" or "good use of one's energy" described the basical principle of Judo. 3. The overarching principles of KANO's Judo theory included the Japanese martial arts, physical training, intellectual and mental cultivation and the betterment of living. 4. KANO's principles were applied to the Japanese martial arts which included Jujutsu, Kenjutsu and Bojutsu called also Judo, in a way that is similar to our contemporary conception of "Budo". 5. KANO's principles of Judo were applied to Jujutsu, in a way that is similar to our modern conception of Judo. 6. In addition to these conceptions, KANO tried to apply his principles to all sports as a method of physical training and called it Judo.
