The molten salts, sodium fluoride-barium fluoride-aluminum fluoride system, are known as "Hoopes' bath" in the electrolytic refining of aluminum. The melting points of this system were already reported by Kenji Ono and the author. In this paper, the densities of some compositions of the above-mentioned system were determined by using a platinum sinker suspended with a fine platinum wire from a balance. The following results were obtained : 1) The densities of molten salts ranged from 2.4 g/cc to 2.8 g/cc at 950℃. The densities increased with the increase in the content of barium fluoride. 2) In this ternary system, the compound NaBaAlF_6 is assumed to have been formed according to the following reaction : [chemical formula] 3) When the content of barium fluoride is kept constant, the maximum density is observed at the point where the content of aluminum fluoride is in excess of cryolite composition. 4) Calculated densities, assuming the additivity of the density of each salt, accord well with measured ones. 5) In this system, the following compositions are suitable for the molten electrolyte of the refining of aluminum ; sodium fluoride 25〜30%, barium fluoride 30〜38%, aluminum fluoride 30〜38% and sodium fluoride 50〜57%, barium fluoride 30〜40%, aluminum fluoride 8〜18%.
