This Paper is Primarily concerned with defining ideology and presenting an approach to its analysis. It does so through a brief review of the historical development of the term and then turns to a semiotic conception of ideology, one that conceives of ideology as a symbolically articulated meaning-making system (Thompson 1990). Ideology is defined as a system of symbolically articulated value-judgements which align to form a constellation of ways of meaning that are in a dialectical relationship with and form a basis for human action. Following such a conception, the notion of analysing ideology through analysis of text is discussed. The investigation of intratextual foregrounding based on a systemic functional grammatical analysis of a text (Halliday 1994; Halliday and Hasan 1985) coupled with intertextual analysis (Lemke 1985; 1995) of these foregrounded elements in order to offer a 'bridge' to the cultural and ideological context of a text is discussed as the basis of a methodological framework capable of revealing the ideology inherent in a text.
