This Paper attempts to assess whether Politeness theory and the concepts of positive and negative face, as universal traits, Can be valuable tools in the analysis of communication. Politeness theory offers a 'tool for describing the quality of social relationships' (Brown and Levinson 1987 : 55). As such its importance for describing and explaining the choices made by native and non-native speakers in English language use is potentially very high. Considerations of the usefulness of politeness theory to the language learner are discussed. Criticisms of Politeness theory and an understanding of language from a systemic functional linguistic approach are used as perspective points from which to consider the validity of politeness theory.
