The present paper reports on a case study of an eleven-year-old boy, who cannot make sufficient use of his speech function because of his retarded language development, though he does not show any hearing impairment. A training method using a sign language was devised for this child, so that it could facilitate his communication with others. The similarity of features between an actual object and the sign language was caused by the very nature of the latter. These features indicated the intensive character is tics of the concept of the object. Thus, the sign language was considered to be useful for the conceptual behavior. The study attempted to classify the child's behavior in different situations with or without context. As a result, some conditions contributing to changes of conceptual behavior were suggested.
