Microbial communities of Antarctic soils are analysed with regard to their structures and compositions of microautotrophs and microheterotrophs. Size classes of bacteria and morphotypes of autotrophs are used as descriptors of samples from soils and plants. This matrix (31 samples×37 descriptors) is clustered in R-and Q-modes. The clusters of samples are defined by their descriptors which have specific significance: Several parameters, e.g. bacterial mean cell volume, fractions of rod shaped bacteria, can be used as discriminators for individual sites and their specific microbial communities. The results are discussed in relation to community studies of other sites.
