The Japanese language is the most extensively taught foreign language at the University of Hawai'i. This paper reports on a qualitative study aiming to explore why those learners are taking the Japanese class. Going beyond the traditional constructs of motivation, which are often characterized by "instrumental" and "integrative" orientations, this study will discuss second language learning motivation from a wider perspective - in social, personal, and educational dimensions. In order to present a more comprehensive picture of second language learning motivation, three participants were selected as the focal students and the data were analyzed using a qualitative approach. It was revealed that there is no clear-cut distinction between the different dimensions of the participants' motivation, which would not have been made evident without a qualitative inquiry. Furthermore, the findings suggested that language teachers should be aware that the learners' expectations for his/her class do not necessarily match his/her needs and wants outside of their classroom.
