The aim of this study is to investigate processes of translation performed by two Japanese learners of English, Hiroshi and Sayaka, from their second language (English) into their first language (Japanese). The study has revealed that some translators find the difficulty in the interpretation of the source text while others find it in the reformulation of it by the target language. Thinkaloud protocols were taken from a task of translation by native Japanese speakers in order to look into what kind of difficulties would arise during the process of translation from English to Japanese. This study was conducted with a very limited number of participants, and the findings should not be generalized. Yet, by looking closely at what was actually in the participants' mind while translating revealed that they, Hiroshi and Sayaka, took different steps in their translation task, which resulted in different outcomes. Specifically, Hiroshi had more difficulty than Sayaka did in comprehending the original text, while Sayaka was more cautious in reproducing what she had understood in the source text. In addition to the importance of teachers' paying greater attention to students' processes of translation, this study suggested that teaching about the different use of loan words in English and in Japanese might be helpful to students.
