Feods which had been taken in the time of the Nara were discussed from a viewpoint of nutritive elements. Results are summarized as follows: 1) A chief article of food consisted apparently of corns. German millet and buckwheat seemed to be eaten commonly at that time, though rice and wheat are principal in the present Japan. Examyles of the dish of those days are Shirugayu, Katagayu (Gohan), Sakuhei, Mochi and the like. 2) In respect of proteinous supplementary foods, it seems that as source ef animal proteid birds, beasts and fishery products were utilized, i. e. , deer, wild boar (pig), wild duck, crane, pheasant, ayu (a kind of fresh-water trout), bonito, eel, abalone, nina (a kind of fresh-water shell-fish) and the like, and as source of vegetable proteid soy bean and adzuki bean among the five cerealf were utilized. 3) Various kinds of vitamin and mineral were taken undoubtedly in nearly natural state without such nutritive losses as those of the present time, because the cooking had not been improved like the present.
