International business is at the crossroad. While the Anglo-American shareholder primacy has foundered due to a host of management misconducts, European stakeholder societies have been shackled by a succession of anemic economic growths. Both systems have equally faced with ubiquitous mega-problems arising from aging population, environmental destruction, bumpy IT innovations, and unstable capital markets: people are increasingly risk-averse; anti-global movements are rampant; the locus of power is shifting from center to periphery; irrational exuberance is raging. Efficiency of a market economy based upon contract regime on one hand and stability of a corporate economy based upon trust regime on the other will have to be synthesized in the coming age of a network economy, where both access to intellectual property and its co-creation by suppliers and users are more important than heretofore exclusive ownership of physical assets. For that synthesis to happen, better understandings of common law, equity culture, and English language will be essential.
