There are many people who have an almost "racial memory" of the story of Les Miserables. This is caused by the highly popular musical which dominated stages all over the world in the last decade. Further, many busy readers have come to know the work through the proliferation of abridged editions. In past times of higher standards of high school curricula, the book was required reading. There are those who have confessed to only perusing "Cliff Notes" of the work. No matter the extent of one's contact with the novel, there is great confusion as to the true story line. This paper compares many of the versions with the uncut English translation.
