Despite best efforts by the Ministry of Education to make Japanese English classes more communicative, there remains much to do before average Japanese high school students can acquire sufficient communicative abilities. English is an important tool for communication, but English grammar is often taught solely to score higher on university entrance examinations. In this article, the author surveys existing English grammar textbooks used in Japanese classroom instruction to see if they adequately meet the needs of teachers and students in preparing for entrance examinations. Notwithstanding the widespread use of English grammar textbooks, rote learning processes are inconclusive or impractical at best in preparing students for university entrance examinations and developing their communicative abilities.
