The evangelization of Japan by the Catholic Church took place in the 16th century, when the Jesuits were sent at the request of the King of Portugal, and in the 19th century, when the Fathers of the Paris Foreign Mission Society began anew, with the support of the French Government. These two periods of the 16th century in Portugal and Spain and the 19th century in France correspond to the periods when devotion to Our Lady "The Immaculate Conception" reached its peak. In the former period the devotion received impetus from the teaching of the Council of Trent concerning religious images. In the latter period there was the definition by Pius IX of the doctrine of "The Immaculate Conception" of Mary, which seemed to receive confirmation from the appearances of Our Lady "The Immaculate Conception" at Lourdes. The present study, by considering historically the development in Europe of the devotion to Our Lady "The Immaculate Conception" and how it was received and developed in Japan, attempts to show the place of the Catholic Church in Japan in the history of the Church Universal.
