In my previous work, I had already pointed out that the development of classical music is deeply related to the culture and environment of the European continent, especially its religion (Christianity), its customs, its climate and particularly its architecture. Every time I listened to the sound of a pipe organ or the sound of bells from a magnificent church in Europe. I could not help but realize that classical music deveroped its original concepts and forms in such environment. From the Meiji restoration (1868), classical music was officially introduced to Japan. Especially from the postwar to the present, people habe beem eager to learn classical music on Japan's soil. The huge music industries, the universities (colleges) specialized in music, music lessons, and conceits in communities tell the initial success of the great interest in classical music in Japan. The longstanding popularity of classical music in Japan, however, does not simply lead to the fact that Japanese people precisely understand classical music. For those who love or who try to understand classical music in its original forms, the understanding among Japanese people is more Japanese oriented. For example, some Japanese are more interested in the techniques of classical music and tend to ignore the importance of the basics and cultural background of classical music. Such misunderstandings sometimes lead to the numbers of skeptical performances of classical music in Japan. In this paper, therefore, I shall point out what are the possibilities and limitations for Japanese to understand classical music in Japan. The paper will further suggest that we should understand classical music in not only from Japanese perspectives but also by respecting original concepts and forms.
