Author's research on steel welding dates back to 1933. The first five years of his activity were devoted to basic studies, in which it was discovered that a low-carbon steel wire containing deoxidizing elements would make a good welding wire. Later he pushed the theoretical research on the contents of Mn and Si, which led to the announcement in 1951 of the Sekiguchi Proposal^<1,2,3>) for Steel Filler Wire for Welding. The proposal was accepted by Japanese industrial circles and the new filler wire was for the first time practically used in oxygen-acetylene gas welding. About 1953, he investigated the CO_2 arc welding and proceeded to the development of CO_2-O_2 arc welding.^<4,5,6>) About 1958, the Japanese industries began CO_2-O_2 arc welding using as the electrode, a steel wire with Mn and Si contents, which was based on the Sekiguchi Proposal;^<8,9,10>) and now its applications are extremely widespread.^<11,12>) Around 1964, he felt keenly the importance of the effect of supplying a basic flux to the molten pool.of metal and discovered that by CO_2-O_2 arc welding with a basic coated rod inserted in the root of the groove to be welded, the quality of weld steel could be enhanced. Also he found that in this manner I-butt welding was possible; and if a backing flux was applied to the back side of butt groove, an excellent "Uranami" bead could be laid on the back side of a butt-welded steel joint. Thus he has come to devise a Narrow Gap One Side Arc Welding Process, which is abbreviated as the NOW Process. The NOW Process can expedite the welding and largely cut down the welding cost; and in this process the welding distortion is small. In 1968, this process was tried for the first time by the Japanese industries and since then its application is steadily expanding. This paper describes the development of this process, cites various test results on steel welding by this process and compares this process with manual arc welding process and submerged arc welding process in order to present the merits of this process.
