This essay focuses on the activities of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) after 1880. The first section discusses the issues of woman suffrage, which Francis Willard strongly supported as a means of home protection. The second section discusses a variety of activities that WCTU organized. Francis Willard carefully guided the membership of the WCTU to expand its involvement beyond temperance work, such as the labor movement, welfare issues, prison reform, education reform, the peace movement, the kindergarten movement and many others. These acctivities are quite radical, however, under the guise of the Home Protection banner, WCTU had little opposition. The third section discusses the political education which WCTU had established. WCTU provided women with an education in large-scale organization activities, in parliamentary procedures, in techniques of political agitation, and in group action. In 1890s, Willard involved in partisan politics and a commitment to socialism developed. Her views were different from those of other members. When Willard died in 1898, a retreat began. WCTU narrowed its interests and it became a temperance organization once again.
