In a series of Korean folk housing studies, Iwatsuki's treatise on the topological classification of floor plan in Korean local houses published in 1924 was one of the epoch-making works before World War II. We can find, however, many suggestive informations in some preceding studies to Iwatsuki (1924), also. In this article, the author tried to reconsider the geographical viewpoints and significance in the Japanese literature of the earliest studies on Korean folk housing. Although only a few geographers researched Korean folk houses through this period, many researchers in the other fields, as architecture and ethnology, made their works in the geographical aspects of housing, as the relation between housing and its natural environment, regional differentiation of house form, and the distribution or the diffusion of specific elements of houses. The studies in this period can be divided into three stages according to their viewpoints and purposes of research. At the first stage, we can find some introductory works to provide the general knowledge on Korean dwelling culture for Japanese people. In those studies, it was the main subjects to understand the characteristics of house form with their contrast of natural environment between Korea and Japan. Especially, the available materials for building and the climatic condition in those regions were appreciated as important factors of house form there. At the second stage, Japanese research activity was oriented to the specific regions in the northern part of Korea by the military needs, and the detailed observation on the actual life and the hygienic condition in and around the dwelling was developed beyond the level of introductory works. Through this research, a lot of regional data including some various findings of several cultural elements of Korean houses were accumulated and published. The third stage, when the Japanese Governor-General of Korea pushed forward with its regional research projects all over the country, is characterized by a kind of geographical viewpoint not only to the natural background of housing such as climate, vegetation and geology, but also to the social and cultural background, as economy life, cultural stock, migration and cultural diffusion in and around the Korean Peninsula. Moreover, the common understanding that the floor plan in the northern region should be distinguished from that in the other regions in Korea was established to precede the first attempt of classification of Korean house form presented by Iwatsuki (1924). Although there are, in fact, quite a few errors and misunderstandings, which tend to occur in such an early period of studies, we can find also some useful data and suggestions for present geographers to attempt a comparative study of the house form and culture over the Korean Peninsula and its surrounding area.
