For the purpose of prevention of osteoporosis, the present condition of the body situation and food intake was investigated for students in a growth phase, and their mothers. This investigation was carried out for eighth grade students and their mothers at R-junior high school in a coastal area of Iwate, S-junior high school in the southern Kitakami high-ground area, and W-junior high school at the foot of the Ohu mountain range within Iwate prefecture. The main results were as follows: 1) For the bone density of junior high school student's, the men of R-junior high school demonstrated high levels and the women of S-junior high school and W-junior high school also demonstrated high levels. On the other hand, for the mother's bone density, the mothers of W-junior high school showed a little more than 103% of high value compared with the fidual bone density of the same age. 2) From the questionnaire about morning appetite and skipping a meal, it is suggested that morning appetite is an important factor in skipping a meal. When comparing the students satisfaction with the school lunches, there was a significant difference between the schools. Moreover there appeared to be significant differences in the amount of food consumed during school lunch between the schools. 3) The likes/dislikes and intake frequency of milk and milk products were studied, especially with the necessity for much more milk and milk products intake for women junior high school students in an important growth phase. The study indicated a similar level of liking milk and milk products between the three schools. However there appeared to be a difference in the consumption of milk and milk products with one school registering a very low level of consumption. 4) From the intake investigation of all nutrients there appeared to be a similar tendency for the students of the three schools to consume more nutrients then their mothers. This was true for both men and women. However, an inverse relationship was indicated between the students and their mothers for the specific nutrients of protein and fat. 5) Although a similar tendency was seen between the results of the questionnaire for food intake frequency and the resutls of the amount of intake according to food groups, it was necessary to investigate the amount of intake according to food group in order to provide more details about the contents of food intake.
