It is clear from such things as ceremonials for baptism in the early Church and from the articles of the Apostles' Creed that it is one of the most fundamental dogmas of the Catholic Church that God, though being three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is essentially one, that is, one God in three persons. The problem of the APPROPRIATION of the essential attributes which we are going to address here results precisely from the faith in this triune God. Namely, from the articles of faith of the Apostles' Creed which proclaim that God, being three presons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, is nevertheless one, it should be legitimately addressed why the essential and absolute perfections and operation of God which, precisely because of the oneness of God, should belong in an equal degree to all three persons, are to be ascribed primarily to one person ; for insatance, "eternity" and "creation" belong to the Father, "species", and "beauty" to the Son, and "use" and "gift" to the Holy Spirit. This question is called "appropriation" in traditional Theology. In choosing to tacle this problem of appropriation of the essential attributes we will seek in the writing of St. Thomas Aquinas the key to solving this same question and chiefly address ourselves to Sum. theol., I. q. 39, a. 8, where he directly deals whith this question.
