This paper investigates the functional similarities between the Japanese conjunctive particle 'nara' and the topic marker 'wa.' First, the logical similarity between copula sentences and conditional sentences is discussed. This aspect is often summarized as these grammatical constructs are inferential. Second, the pragmatic aspects of copula sentences and conditional sentences are discussed in conjunction with Haiman's thesis ('conditionals are topics'). It is suggested that the head nouns of copula sentences are also topics. Third, it investigates the historical development of the Japanese cojunctive particle 'nara,' and it is suggested that the particle 'nara' is also functioning as a topic marker. From these observations, I offer some evidence supporting that copula sentences, topic sentences and conditional sentences are forming a continuum.
