The Color Purple, Alice Walker's most important work, is composed of two parts: the American part, which shows Celie's struggles under opression for the rights deprived of her by men; and the African part, which tells us Netty's and Samuel's endeavor to propagate Christianity in Olinka. The parts seem to be unrelated, and to make the story jump. In Netty's African part, Walker tries to dispell the illusion that Africa is the Motherland for African-Americans and the refuge from segregation, which is, even after the Civil Rights Movement, a great problem in modern America. Alice Walker asserts that African-Americans should commit themselves to fighting on their own ground, America.
