• This study compares the family names of Japanese people in two different regions : the mainland Japan and Okinawa. All possible meanings and associations I could discover from the Chinese characters in the family names of the two regions have been analyzed, classified, and categorized. Although a small number of the family names (approx. 300) were studied in the manners outlined above, the results clearly show that the meanings and associations of Chinese characters used in the Japanese family names tend to reflect some objects in nature, while the names of the Okinawan families tend to express elements of human wishes.
