This paper is a comparative study of initiation processes of magico-religious specialists in Okinawa and Korea. The Chinese characters 巫(fu) or 巫覡(fugeki) are used to represent the magico-religious specialists in both areas, and in both areas these specialists function as mediums between the human world and the world of spirits and gods. The author's focus in this paper is on magico-religious specialists called yuta in Okinawa, and chomjegi in Cholla-do and Cheju-do. An examination of initiation processes of magico-religious specialists in both countries reveals a very similar concepts at work in the way these specialists receive their supernatural calling. On the other hand, there were many common features, a number of differences were observed in characteristics of possession, in cosmological conceptions, and in social functions performed. Although the quantity of data examined in this paper is somewhat limited, observations of the initiation process were made in the aspects of forms of address and reference, geographical distribution, social functions, and guardian spirits through the collection of life histories. The author's ongoing research in this area will draw upon the initial observations presented in this paper.
