Salt has been acquired from seawater in Japan. How was the method of salt production in Ryukyu Islands? Hiroyama, studying salt production, points out the method since the Middle Age in Japan was still used in the southern Kyushu and the Nansei Islands even in the Modern Age. The salt production and acquirement mainly focus on the solar evaporation. It is assumed that the traditional methods must have been based on the characteristics unique to the coastal landscape of the Tropics as like coral reef, emerged coral, and mangrove tideland. The method used until 1950s, however, cannot be seen in the Ryukyu Islands. This put the difficulty on the fieldwork for the folklore in the Ryukyu Islands, while the many methods, similar or identical to the ones in Ryukyu Islands, still continue to be used in the eastern region of Flores Island, Indonesia under the environment of the tropical coastal morphology. The methods of salt production unknown from Ryukyu Islands also exist in the mangrove tideland of this region. This article, based on the research in the eastern region of Flores Island, compares the methods of salt production between Ryukyu Islands and the eastern Flores and also considers the uniqueness of the landscape for salt production in the Tropics and the Sub-tropics. The example of the salt production in the eastern Flores is reported and the salt production in mangrove tideland is taken into account. At last, the relationship between salt production and coastal morphology is generally considered. The continuing research of ethnological cases in the eastern Indonesia will help the reconstruction of the salt production in the prehistoric Ryukyu.
