We will examine loanword use in the Japanese media, with a focus on its comprehensibility. First we will see the important role that the media plays in the unilateral introduction of new Western (mostly English) vocabulary. Next we will review research on how well these words are understood by the Japanese public. Following that will be a discussion of the non-information uses of loanwords in advertising. Finally the usage of Western loans within the Mainichi Shirnbun newspapers in 2001 will be analyzed.
