The purpose of this paper is to analyze 'student (or pupil) culture'to analyze from the perspective of gender studies, and to consider the aims and prospects for 'gender studies on student culture'. Studies on student culture in Japan have shown inadequate concern for gender, while gender studies have not examined student culture as a place where gender is constructed. In this paper, we first review studies on student culture and gender in Western countries from the 1960s to the present, then consider the possibility of 'gender studies on student culture'. Until the middle of the 1970s, most research dealt only with boy's subcultures. Since around the 1980s, those of girls have been dealt with as well, and starting around the 1990s, attention had once again turned to boys, particularly with regard to the construction of boys'masculinities. Another type of study into adolescent culture, which was initiated by Coleman in 1961, clarified the existence of adolescent status systems. Subsequent researches developed the idea that status systems are gendered, and that physical factors, such as athletics, attractiveness, and visibility, are important. Given the trends of studies mentioned above, there are two ways in which 'gender studies on student culture'might be approached in the future. One is to analyze adolescent status systems, using mainly quantitative methods. The other is to analyze student subcultures and peer group differentiation, using mainly qualitative methods. The integration of knowledge from these two types of method will enable us to shed light on the process of gender construction through student culture and the reproduction of gender through schooling.
