The aim of tnis study is, first to trace the various methods through which the town schools in colonial Massachusetts were supported, and second to point out the main character after support by general taxation had become common. In the matten of school support, the English methods were not suited to the social and economic conditions of the early colony. Community as a whole supported its town school. A more and more public money was devoted to fostering of education, it was natural that the people should desire to control and supervise the schools to which such money was given, on this point, town of Boston was distinguished from the other. But, as Bailn emphasized, it was not the origin of the American public school system (the state school system.)
