Applications of grammatical theories in Japanese language teaching have been sadly neglected for years. It is inevitable that linguistic studies of Japanese on higher levels tend to be something too abstract for practical application in actual language teaching situations, where language in action, rather than a highly systematized theory, is of greater importance. Linguistic theories, however, acquire their authentic values only when they prove to be applicable to actual communication. Japanese language teaching, in its turn, can benefit a great deal from the inclusion of a practical grammatical theory which alone can lay a solid foundation for logical interpretations of actual linguistic phenomena. It is with this view in mind that this paper has attempted an analysis of verbs used by Tatsuji Miyoshi in his poetical works. It is to be hoped that this analysis of verbs in action in modern Japanese will be an incentive for further theoretical studies which are at once better descriptions of the Japanese language and effective prescriptions for better language teaching activities.
