Optical absorption spectra of Ni^<2+> ion doped into binary alkaline silicates, R_2O-SiO_2 (R=Li, Na, K), glassees and ternary alkaline silicates, Li_2O-R'_2O-SiO_2 (R'=Na, K), glasses were measured in the range of wave length from 280 to 2600nm. Obtained results are as follows : (1) Observed spectrum is consisted of two set of bands due to oxygen 6-coordinated Ni^<2+> ion (indicated as type I and II) and a band of oxygen 4-coordinated Ni^<2+> ion. (2) Ni^<2+> ion takes preferentially the 4-coodinated tetrahedral arrangement rather than 6-coordianted octahedral arrangement in sodium and especially in potassium silicate. (3) Change of relative intensity in two types of absorption bands with the chang of glass system and of composition can be understood in terms of the interaction between alkaline ion and non-bridging oxygen in the glass. (4) The above results suggest that there are two types of oxygen coordianted around Ni^<2+> ion which will be somewhat differ in the power of electron donation to Ni^<2+> ion.color indicatorNi^<2+> ionalkaline silicate glassnon-bridging oxygenoptical absorption spectrumoxygen ligand
