Uppurui-nori, Porphyra pseudolinearis U_<EDA> (ppu) with a wide distribution on rock surfaces in the Uppuri Bay, Shimane Prefecture have been widely used as seaweed meals for a long time from an ancient times in the Izumo area. The present paper deals with the studies on the food habits of ppu in the Japanese classical literatures and its chemical compositions for the nutrition. The results can be summarized as follows. (1)The cultural background of the food habits in the living area and the traditional cultures in the living history are very important for the humanbeing. We must, therefore, succeed to the next generation with reliable methods for the potential utilization of the seaweed meals. (2)Ppu is a rich source of the natural products with biological activities. Generally, some biochemical compositions of the algae vary according to the environment because of they accommodate their own habit to the outside conditions. Ppu is, therefore, in season for the table from December to February in the Uppurui Bay.
