The purpose of this paper is, firstly, to define interlanguage and secondly, to examine the various processes involved in interlanguage development. It is hoped that this paper will be useful for instructors who are interested in the unique language production of each of our students. In addition, it is the intention of this paper to demonstrate that "errors" made by second language learners might help to indicate the stage of language acquisition that each individual learner is at and how that learner is creating and testing hypothesis about the second language. Finally, it is hoped that readers see the need for more research into how teachers might utilize this knowledge about the learners" evolving interlanguage systems to help facilitate acquisition.
