This paper will discuss how teachers and teacher trainers might analyse classroom discourse in order to discover whether true genuine communicative interaction is occurring within the classroom. In this endeavour, the Sinclair-Coulthard linguistic model of discourse analysis will be examined and then used to analyse a five-minute sample of classroom discourse. Finally, various insights for teaching will be discussed as a result of the analysis.
