This paper can be thought of as having two parts. Part I is a rather lengthy research overview on gain scores and English language proficiency tests, particularly in relation to the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Part II is a research report on use of the TOEFL in a Japanese college setting. The test is examined from several different statistical angles, with the main point being whether or not the TOEFL is a good short-term measure of true laguage proficiency gain for the student population under consideration. The paper concludes the test has value in assessing group tendencies within this setting, but is much less useful as a measure of individual student progress.
