Why Use Dictation? A Rationale and Some Variations

• Since the 1950's and 60's, when it fell out of favor as an EFL learning/teaching technique, the traditional dictation has slowly regained some of its former popularity. This article offers a brief overview of dictation along with some reasons why it is a useful language learning/teaching activity. There is also presentation of several variations on the traditional dictation, with some examples of these variations used by the author in the EFL classroom. Given its usefulness and flexibility, the argument is made that the value of dictation as a language learning activity is not fully appreciated.
