With the cooperation and financial support of the Japanese government, the World Bank(headoquartered in Washington,U.S.A.) founded the joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program in 1987. This program targets government employees of middle standing from member nations of the World Bank. It marks its ninth anniversary this year after producing 650 scholarships for special study programs around the world. This program was started in order to meet the needs of 'bringing up manpower capable of leading their developing nations' and 'practical training in scientific knowledge and policy management. In April of 1995, the University of Tsukuba and Yokohama National University were designated to open this program for the first time in Japan. The applicants came from as many as thirty countries. This course will provide three sessions in six years from 1995. The main feature of this program is that all lessons are conducted in English. Therefore, participants of this program must have a high command of English. At the same time, circumstances in Japan require them to have a basic knowledge of the Japanese language and Japanese culture. In order to help them acquire minimum requirements, the International Student Center takes charge of the 'Japanese and Japanese Culture' class as preparatory education for this course. This kind of class is expected to be important in the future as the same kind of program becomes more popular in other areas of Japan. Here is a report on class activities of the 'Japanese language class in this course.
