In this research, 198 subjects (2nd, 4th and 6th grade primary school children, together with undergraduates, and postgraduates) were requested to answer some questions after reading comic strips in which stories about conflicts over possessions between a child and his/her friend or mother were presented. The subjects were requested to enter 1) their judgements as to whether the children ought to give up their possessions or not, and 2) the reason for such a judgement. Upon analysing the judgements, 6th grade children already seemed to have the modern possession consciousness, since their judgement patterns generally corresponded to patterns made on the grounds of a modern concept of property. Nonetheless, further analysis of their reasons shows that many of their judgements seem to be made not on the basis of a modern concept of property but for other reasons, such as that the child has had nothing to be reproached about his/her possession, especially in the case of child-mother conflict. These results were interpreted as follows. 1) 6th grade children are in a transitional phase between a non-modern possession consciousness and a modern one. 2) The shift is a part of their psychological weaning. 3) Thus the discrepancy between their judgements and their reasons shows some psychological conflict with their parents. In addition, the following two issues were discussed. 1) What does the word "mine" really mean for children who have a different consciousness of possession from the modern one? 2) Can the developmental course, which these Japanese children seem to show, be generalised and extended to include other children growing up in other types of society, particularly in ones that have not yet become modernized?
