G. Balandier, as well as C. Levi-Strauss, obtained great achievements in sociology and social anthropology in post-war France. His methodological standpoint was formed under the influence of G. Gurvitch's sociology of depth and dynamism, of which the features were to try to grasp a society as a situation which is always going beyond what it is. In this paper, first, we summarize Gurvitch's influence on Balandier's sociology. And then, on the basis of this analysis, we will refer to Balandier's early major work, Actual Sociology of Black Africa. After this work, he positively went into political anthropology, especially its theoretical aspects. In his study in political anthropology, he put light on the importance of historicity and politics in the primitive society, which had been devaluated in the previous approach. We, last, discuss the validity of his analysis of this.
