Syumei OKAWA, as well as Ikki KITA, is widely known as an ideologue of ultranationalism in Japan. Ultranationalism in Japan was, first of all, a movement which included real politics, economics, philosophy, culture and so on. And, generally speaking, it cannot be denied that ultranationalism as a thought was served to justify the Japanese invasion of other Asian countries such as China and Korea. So it is rare that ultranationalism in thought is argued in itself. The same is the case with OKAWA's thought. It has been argued not so much in itself as in relation to the movement of ultranationalism. In this essay, I try to cast light on OKAWA's thought in itself. First, I take up his approach to religion and clarify the characteristics of his view about religion, which seems to lie at the center of his thought. Then, on the basis of it, I argue his political thought, especially his view of a state, and its result in real politics.
