Lipoprotein (a) [Lp (a)] is recognized as an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis. However, the possible role of Lp (a) in diabetes mellitus remains unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that Lp (a) promoted the proliferation of human aortic smooth muscle cells (SMC) in culture. Furthermore, Lp (a), obtained from diabetic patients, stimulated the proliferation of SMC more than that from control subjects, suggesting that Lp (a) might be more atherogenic in patients with diabetes mellitus.
