Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is considered to be an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, the metabolism of Lp(a) remains unknown. We developed the ELISA system for the measurement of rhesus monkey Lp(a) and determined plasma Lp(a) levels in low density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R) deficient rhesus monkeys. Plasma Lp(a) concentrations were not significantly related to LDL-R function, suggesting that LDL-R may not be involved in a major way in Lp(a) catabolism.
