A rearing experiment of eunicid worm, Marphysa sanguinea (Annelida, Polychaeta)was carried out in laboratory to compare growth and reproduction in two different substrata during the 9.5 month period from November 22,1988 through September 13,1989. Maturing eunicid worms were collected from a rocky beach near Suttsu, on the Japan Sea side of southeastern Hokkaido, Japan, on October 23,1988. Two batches of eunicid worms, consisting of 28-30 individuals of 0.3-9.0 g in weight, were kept in two glass aquaria, with (A) a coral sand bed of 1.7 mm in average diameter, and (B) a gravel bed of 2.4 mm in diameter. Each aquarium has a closed circulation system with the same dimensions (29.0 cm X 59.5 cm X 35.0 cm) , containing 35 ιvolume of seawater. The depth of each substratum was 15 cm. Throughout the experimental period, the worms were kept at 21℃ under natural light condition and fed minched sandlance every third day. The culturing density of the worms in aquarium A was twice that of those in aquarium B. After 3.5 months, individuals smaller than 1 g occurred abundantly in aquarium B, whereas there were very few in aquarium A. In aquarium B the worms larger than 3 g steadily increased until May 25,but remained the same in number thereafter. The results indicate the gravel substratum was more favorable for the growth and reproduction of the eunicid worm than the coral sand bed. While the difference of substratum had no effect on the growth of individuals larger than 3 g, the coral sand bed appeared to be suitable for the worms smaller than 3 g.
