In 1902,Muhammed 'Abduh, contributed six papers to the well-known Journal al-manar, nos. 10-15,Vol. V. Of these, excluding the first which appeared in no. 10,the other five papers were compiled into a book which made its appearance in that very same year, under the title, "al-Islam wa al-Nasraniyya ma'a al-'Ilm wa al-Madaniyya" It may be stated to a fair degree of certitude, that "al-Islam wa al-Nasraniyya" occupies a truly unique position, perhaps second in importance only his other major work entitled "Risalat al-Tawhid", which was published in 1897. This latter work was based on his highly academic lectures on Islamic theology, delivered at the Sultaniyya of Beirut during the years 1885-88. The former work however was executed in 1902,during the height of the Islamic reform movement in Egypt, a movement in which he himself occupied the leading position as Grand Mufti, and its purpose being to enlighten the common man by acquainting him with his own views regarding the situation of modern Egypt, Islamic history, and European history, besides his vindication of Islam against accusations made by a Syrian Christian, Farah Antun. We here present the reader with a complete Japanese version of al-Islam wa al-Nasraniyya, which includes short explanatory notes.
