Daqing and Shengli, the leading oil fields in China, have been keeping their peak production levels since 1970's and they account for 38.6% and 22.6% of the national total production in 1994 respectively. In the northwestern China, the revived traditional Karamay oil field and the recent activities in Tarim Basin (Taklamakan Desert) have attracted attention of domestic and foreign oil industries. This paper briefly reviews the developmental background of those oil fields historically, geographically and geologically based on the author's experiences in China.
