The breakup of Soviet Union severely damaged a satelite state, Mongolia, which for about 70 years had faithfully followed the steps of the Union. With the fall of economy, the Mongolian educational system also collapsed that had been stable and effective under the socialist regime. Students were victimized by the fall and the tardy growth of market economy. The disrupture caused the so-called street children. This paper is to describe what the educational climate of Mongolia has been like since 1988, and what a Mongolian student, Naranbaatal, saw in his schools in the transitional period from socialist economy to market economy in the years 1988 to 2000.
